SAMSUNG PUSHES THE SMARTWATCH OF THE FUTURE WITH THEIR NEW GEAR S WATCH — DUE TO LAUNCH OCTOBER 2014

Samsung has announced the release of their new Smartwatch – the Samsung Gear S

Due sometime in October 2014 this watch will be a standalone device, with a 3G sim slot hidden at the back of the watch giving full smartphone capabilities, without the need to tether to a phone like previous models.

Connectivity is also boosted with the usual Wifi and Bluetooth that is expected of these devices, and Samsung has also announced the release of the Gear Circle, a necklace-like device which will connect to the watch via Bluetooth and act as a headset and earphones. Calls can be taken and made this way, as well as media consumed such as music stored in the watch or streamed via Wifi or 3G.

The design of the Samsung Gear S is very appealing, with a 2 inch curved screen to fit the contours of the wrist. The screen is touchscreen in the same way a smartphone is, with only one physical button on the front of the watch. It will come in Blue-black, and Pure White colours, and a good feature is the ability to change the band.

Storage is 4GB, and the processor is Dual-core 1GHz Memory running Tizen software. This is an open source software not unlike Android, which Samsung was involved in developing.

Battery life is quoted as 2 days of use, from a 300mAh Li-Ion battery. The watch also contains multiple sensors such as GPS, Heart rate, Compass, and even UV.

The Samsung Gear S is water and dust resistant, and will come pre-loaded with Nike's running app, and the S Health app.

Overall this watch is a step up in the race to develop smartwatches mainly due to the 3G sim slot. The design, being curved, is also extremely sleek compared to slightly chunkier models to date. It will appeal to a large audience because of this.

The growth of the Quantified Self movement will mean that smaller devices worn on the body with multiple sensors will become more and more popular, and coupled with full smartphone capabilities this watch is certainly bringing things closer to the future.
